Review - Invictus

The subject matter of this quasi-biopic film is somewhat misleading;  if asked to compile a list of 20 relevant topics of interest, you would be hard pressed to find a tenth percentile that would include South African politics and Rugby among said interests.  Reading the summary of this movie and viewing the trailer does it a great disservice;  this is not a movie about politics that features some rugby athletes, nor vice-versa.

Clint Eastwood seems determined to leave behind a legacy of films that connect the stories of generations that otherwise might be lost to the obscurity of a high school textbook.  The story of Nelson Mandela's reunification of a nation divided is encapsulated wonderfully in this uplifting tale of the human spirit and potential.

Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon execute their performances flawlessly, and both manage to ingratiate their characters to us without overshadowing either the moral or each other, and the score by Michael Stevens and Kyle Eastwood (son of director, Clint) brings you into the audible moments expertly.

In short, this movie won't be for everyone.  It will be too political for some, too foreign for others, or maybe just lacking of action for many others.  However, to anyone with an open mind and a willingness to be uplifted by a narrative, this should be worth exploring.
